The Minister for Regional Development, Rural Affairs , Arts and Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys T.D. officially opened our redevelopment of Castleblayney College on August 29th. The development included a three storey extension to the school as well as a large stand alone P.E. Hall. The hall is positioned on a raised section of ground , once occupied by the Dundalk to Enniskillen railway line and the building entrance suggests a memory of that infrastructure. The hall provides a full size basketball court and features maple flooring and wall panels. The bow profiled steel roof structure is shaped to allow clerestory windows on the north and south facades , ensuring a light filled interior.
The restricted site and complicated split levels of the existing school required an imaginative solution to the main school extension. This was achieved by placing a three storey structure perpendicular to the existing building, aligned with the axis of the existing lift. This solution delivered a highly efficient use of existing circulation and ensured all new classrooms enjoy good levels of daylight and orientation.
