91-93 Merrion Square
Dublin
This project involved the complete refurbishment of three interconnecting Georgian houses, with a total floor area of 2,337 sqm, located on the west side of Merrion Square, Dublin 2.
The buildings, which are these Protected Structure, had previously been used as office accommodation for a banking organisation and had suffered from insensitive works which had damaged many original features. We sought to undo this damage as much as possible and at the same time ensure the buildings could function as modern office accommodation. Our design has sucessfully achieved this balance and has fully reinstated the principle rooms and restored much of the damaged or lost historic detailing.
Externally , the restoration of the brickwork and the general improvements to the exterior fabric has restored the grandeur of the buildings in the context of Merrion Square and to the integrity of the Georgian core.
During the construction works we uncovered a number of hidden original elements including 17th century wallpaper and decorative stencils on ceilings, all of which have now been retained as historic features in the building.
The building now serves as office for the Oireachtas , the Government of Ireland.
